The Louisville Medical and Education District, known as LOUMED, is a 22-block, fully integrated district in the heart of downtown Louisville where healthcare, education, research, and economic vitality come together.

What was once a loose collection of hospitals, academic facilities, and businesses has become a dynamic, clearly defined hub of continuous activity, where clinicians deliver lifesaving care, researchers advance medical discovery, and students prepare for careers in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and allied health.

Anchored by premier institutions and strengthened through strategic partnerships and ongoing investment, LOUMED serves as the central force in Louisville’s health, economy, and long-term future with over 26,000 people working or studying in the District every day. The partners who make up LOUMED generate more than $4.7 billion in wages each year, support the region’s densest concentration of workers, and have fueled significant economic growth with more than half a billion dollars in new investments in just the past five years. Another $1 billion in investment is expected by 2030.

The Louisville Medical & Education District, LOUMED, is located in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky and stretches east to west from Clay to Second Street, and north to south from Breckinridge to Liberty Street. Chestnut Street and Broadway serve as the district’s primary corridors, linking the region’s largest hospitals, medical education institutions, colleges and research facilities, along with some of the region’s largest employers.

LOUMED’s 22-block district brings together historic architecture and modern facilities within minutes of downtown Louisville’s hotels, restaurants, and destinations. These boundaries create an incredible economic and education ecosystem that drive the region’s health and economic growth.

LOUMED is easy to reach and incredibly well-connected, both within Louisville and beyond. LOUMED sits just minutes from Interstates 64, 65, and 71, putting it at the intersection of major national travel routes. This access makes it simple to get to and from cities like Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, St. Louis, and Chicago, and places LOUMED in proximity of millions of people across the Southeast and Midwest.

Getting around locally is just as easy. Public transit runs through and around the district, streets are safe and walkable, and bike access connects LOUMED to downtown neighborhoods and nearby education campuses.
